The newest animated flick to hit theaters this weekend is 'Freebirds.' Nothing to do with the Skynyrd song of the same name. This one comes to us from Relativity Media and Real FX Animation (The award winner's first full length computer animated flick)
This one is very good and a lot of fun for the whole family. The story of two turkeys who travel in back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get the Thanksgiving turkey off the menu for good. (wait 'til you see what they replace it with-you'll get no spoilers here). The script was great and what I like about it was it was not predictable. Usually in a time travel movie you go back in time and if you fail in your quest, no problem, you just go back again to a few moments before your failure and fix it. That's what I expected and that's what didn't happen. Although one turkey did go back in time but to the moment he left after the failure and continued on. So they solve the issue of getting the turkey off the menu creatively.
3D is solid and the voice acting of Owen Wilson (he's getting real good at this), Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler is at the top of the game. A co-starring appearance is put in by George Takei of Star Trek fame as the computer S.T.E.V.E. (like H.A.L. in '2001')
The kids I brought said it was both sad and inspiring at the same time. My daughter gave it a 5 and her friend Rose said the sad parts she didn't like and said a 4).
There's a couple of small things I would have added to the story so:
3 stars and with the kid's input.
3 and a half stars.
