'American Hustle' & 'Gravity' lead Oscar nominations

(Yahoo!) - As always, there were some big surprises with this morning's Academy Award nominations.

Not surprising: That awards heavyweights "American Hustle" and "Gravity" tallied the most nods, with 10 apiece, while "12 Years a Slave" (widely considered the frontrunner to win Best Picture), scored a not-too-shabby nine nominations.

Those three titans are joined by "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," and "The Wolf of Wall Street," making for a total of nine contenders in the top race.

Left out of Best Picture: "August: Osage County," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Lee Daniels' The Bulter," and most surprisingly, "Saving Mr. Banks."

Even bigger surprises came in the acting categories: Tom Hanks was a double snub, failing to make the cut in Best Actor ("Captain Phillips") or Best Supporting Actor ("Banks"). Robert Redford, considered an early frontrunner, also missed the boat for "All Is Lost." Christian Bale received a somewhat unexpected Best Actor nomination for "American Hustle."

Meanwhile, Hanks's "Banks" costar Emma Thompson was MIA from the Best Actress list, while Oprah Winfrey, also considered an early top contender, missed out on Best Supporting Actress for "The Butler."
